We left early in the morning to head towards Florence. While waiting on the bus we say groups of oriental people dressed in completely orange outfits. Even the hair of some of the people was orange. We have been seeing them all over Rome. We saw at least 15 in the Vatican and over all probably close to 100. These two pictures were taken over 20 mins apart. They are everywhere and its kinda like a game of who can spot more of them! We thought they were only in Rome but we also saw them in Florence. A girl in our group asked them about their outfits and they gave her a card that said they were hair dressers and the color orange means happy so they want to make you happy. Everyone was loving them and asking for photos. On the way we stopped in the city of Orvieto. Here is Orvieto Catherdal. I really liked the striped stones on the sides. Orvieto was about 1 1/2 away out of Rome. The country side looks similar to Paris. Here is Jessica and I on the edge of Orvieto. We then went to a little market for lunch but none of the food was really like something you could quickly eat before getting on the bus. Mostly spices, meat and cheese. The cheese was so cheap compared to America! Some people in our group got huge (really huge) wedge of cheese for only 5 euros and it was good cheese. FlorenceAfter we dropped off our bags at the hotel we went to the Duomo. Its exterior really isn't that old which is intersting compared to all the other catherdals we have seen. Here is the baptistery that use to have the Gates of Paradise. Uffizi Gallery After lots of running around, we finally got to go inside the baptistery. We had to get tickets to climb the dome tomorrow before they ran out so it was a lot of back and forth which is why the photos are a little crazy. Climbing the TowerThere was over 400 steps to the top of the tower. It looks like we are higher than the dome but it is actually slightly lower. It was so windy and cold. Like freezing cold!! You could see our breaths and everyone had on all the clothes they brought. Thats the best picture of me I got becuase the wind was so bad in every direction. Then we split into groups after the dome and when and did our own thing. Molly and I wanted to go look for leather purses so we went to the leather vendors on the street. Theres no way that stuff is really. You feel it and it feels just like vinyl. They are all selling the same bags and the prices were crazy. Some of the sellers would go down on prices. If you asked for the price and they would say 35 but for you 25 and then if you walk away they say no no 20, 15 come back. If you need a self esteem booster go walk past the vendors. They say pretty lady come back and beautiful girl I give discount. It was hiliarous. You just walk by looking at their bags and they just start almost yelling compliments at you.
Today we had a free day, I don't really remember what we did so I need to ask someone.
Just posted from day 21 (2/9) to today. so You have to scroll down to see the older posts.Today we went to Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilicia. It took a long time to get through the lines and then security. The weather was hot in the morning and then pretty cold when we got out 5 hours later. We went to the Sistine Chapel but no photos were allowed so sorry about that but you can just look them up on the internet and they will probably be way better than what I could take anyway. (All the photos below are from the Vatican)
Today we went to Santa Maria in Trastevere, San Frencesco a Ripa, Aventine Hill, Santa Sabina, Santa Maria in Cosmed, Saint Cecilia, Temples of Hercules & Portunus. We saw so many things so I'm not really sure which church is which at this point in the trip. We learned about how many of the churches have different columns because they were taken from other buildings and were called Spoilers. Thats why a lot of the buildings are missing pieces or are completely gone because the materials have been taken and used for other stuff. The floors were also made out of the marble taken out of fancy places and broken up for the floor. It is like this in almost every building. The floors look so fancy and cool patterns but thats the reason none of the buildings have marble anymore so thats too bad. (sorry the pictures aren't the best, I forgot to charge the camera battery so I had to use my Iphone.) Notice the floating baby head, they were creepy
We went to church. Its about 35 mins away and its a long up hill walk but I can't complain compared to the pioneers. The ward is small and about half of them is all American. There is a translator for all the meetings so we don't miss anything. Then we went home and got pizza at Brown & Brown. It is just across the street from our dorms and only 2 euros for a large slice. There is no kitchen at the place we are staying so we have to eat out almost every meal but since the pizza place is so cheap it actually costs less to eat out most times then to try to buy food at a grocery store. I feel like food at stores is expensive here. Then we walked to the gelato place again it is just so good!
Today was kinda boring. I just did homework today. This text book is way too big for 3 weeks!! All of us are dying!! Its 170 pages that are almost completely blank that we have to fill in. But we took a break in the evening to get Gelato. You have to understand that I don't like Gelato that much, I think it is glorified ice cream. Theres this place called La Gelateria Frigidarium. It is 1.8 km away but it is so worth it. I get the Crema Fiorentina and they dip it in chocolate. Honestly so good! I have had it 4 days in a row and I have to walk all the way there from my room so that tells you it is worth it for me to walk that far just for this after a long day of walking already.
We had a free day so we decided to go to Tivoli. It was about 1 and 20 min both ways from Rome. The mountains looked so similar to Utah. Still not sure that I'm really across the world. This could all be like the Truman show and I'm still in America. We visited Villa d'Este. It was 8 euros to get in which was lame because if your a art student you can get in for free and we showed all our student cards and textbooks but no luck. The Villa inside was really interesting. You couldn't take any photos at all. So heres a photo I stole for the internet. The gardens are what make this place! It was so amazing. It looked like what I think of when you say Italy and Tuscany. It was very pretty and quiet.
Today we went to Santa Pudenziana, St. Maria Maggoire, Santa Prassede, S. Martino ai Monti, Baths of Trajan and Domus Aurea. It was Santa Maria MaggioreHere is Jesus crib. Its hard to tell in the photo but theres a wood crib under a metal frame. Some people in our group couldn't understand that it didn't look like that when Jesus was born. Most likely this isn't really Jesus crib because there was a big market for wood pieces related to different important events. |
