Today we went to the Priscilla Catacombs. It was a strange place. There were no bones at all in all the parts we went to. It was so humid down there and the tour guide told us the first person to rediscover the catacombs was lost for 4 days in the maze. There was no photos allowed at all so I don't have anything to show you today. But we saw the oldest painting of Mary and Jesus down there so that was cool. Then we went home and did homework.

Day 25 - San Pietro in Vincoli, Forum, Palatine & Coliseum, Imperial Fori and Trevi Fountain2/13/2018 Today we went to San Pietro in Vincoli, Forum, Palatine & Coliseum, Imperial Fori and Trevi Fountain. The Coliseum was super cool!! One of my favorite parts of the trip. It was busy but not too busy. I wish that we could have spent more time there but we had a lot of places to get through. heres the ForumThese next photos are from the places other than the Forum. I'm not really sure what places some of them are. The last is the Trevi Fountain. Here are the chains that bound Peter. According to legend they were separated and held in different churches. Then when they were brought back together they magicall fit and fused together.
Today we went to the Capitoline Museum, Ponte Saint Angelo and the Patheon. ![]() Up above is where Julius Caesar was killed. This building on the next photo is a family tower to watch what was going on. When a family would conquer another family they would take part of the other families tower and put it in their own. I thought that was kinda funny and cool. This head is giant but its hard to tell in the photo it is called the Colossal Port. of Constantine. As Donald Trump says "Yuge" The twins are Romus and Remulus. Romus later became ruler of Rome and according to legend was raised by a she wolf. Pantheon - Former Roman TempleWe then went to Saint Peter's Basilica. I think I'm kinda clueless because I didn't realize that it was also the Vatican. So technically I have now been to 4 countries because the Vatican is its own country. It was really pretty but wasn't as large as I thought it was going to be. We are trying to get the schedule to work out so we can go see the Pope one day in the next 3 weeks. The crowds weren't bad so we went in. It was very pretty! I like it a lot more than the Gothic Cathedral styles that we have seen so much of the last 3 weeks. That ceiling is all fake!! Its just paint. It really looked like a coffered ceiling. I thought it was pretty cool.
We took the metro to the airport. Honestly the worst thing ever. It was so many escalators with luggage! The flight was good and only about 2 hours. We got to Rome and didn't even have to go through any customs so it was super chill. We were lucky and got a bus to the dorms. It was so much warmer in Rome and in Paris. After we got the luggage dropped off we went for a walk and dinner. Everything was closed by the time we went to dinner but we found this nice pasta place called Pastation and it was so good!! It was about average for all the other places to eat here for 11 euros. But it was so good but no one has Alfredo sauce so I guess thats American. Rome has great pasta but not pastries.
It was snowing pretty bad but we decided to go the the ticket office to see if they had cheap student tickets. We went and were able to get $10 tickets that had awesome seats!! Other people in our group got some tickets to but it was such bad seats so we got really lucky. After the ticket office we went to the Petit Palace. Turns out that I need to visit more places for my other classes to write essays on different museums so it worked out to go see this. We went home for a while and did a little packing for the flight to Rome in the morning. On our way to the ballet we stopped at apparently the best hot chocolate in Paris. The place is called Angelina. The hot chocolate is pretty expensive and you didn't get that much but it was so rich!! I couldn't even drink half of the tiny cup. It tasted almost identical to hot fudge and it was so thick! Then we went to the opera house (its the same place we went a little over a week ago.) We had awesome seats!!! It was amazing! Best Ballet I have ever seen!!! It was called Oneguine and everyone in our group who went agreed that it was amazing! But Jessica and I had the best seats (the camera makes it look further away from the stage than we really were.) Our seats we almost middle and about 10-12 rows back on the Orchestra level.
Today we went to Disneyland Paris. I had never been to Disneyland before so it was fun to go. I have found that I'm getting too old for rollercoasters. It was like really really cold. We had to wait in line pretty long for a lot of the rides. Some people in our group went just one week earlier and there was hardly anyone so I don't know why so many people were there today. Our feet by the end were so frozen from waiting in line for 40 mins for almost every ride. A lot of the rides were also closed since it had just snowed a lot and Paris is not used to that much stone.
Look at my face in the ride photo. Yeah thats how excited roller coasters now make me. I don't know how older people do amusement rides I get so sick now and that used to never happen anymore. Today we didn't do a lot. The weather in Paris is really bad so it was going to take us a long time to get home so we decided to not go to Chartes Chathedral. It took us about 4 and half hours to get back to our hotel. Jessica and I went to the mall for 2 hours. It was interesting to see all the security that we had to go through to even get in and then again to try on clothes. I wrote some more essays but other than that we didn't get to do much.
I have a lot more to say and post about today but the internet at the motel is really really slow so it is taking like 5 mins to upload one photo so tomorrow I'm going to try edit this post and add more photos.
Today we went to D-Day sites (Normandy) and Mont Saint Michel. We started out from our hotel at 8:30 in Bayeux and drove for 30 mins to the Normandy American Cemetery. It was such bad weather but nice to see the countryside. It looks very similar to the 2007 Pride and Prejudice movie. A lot of rolling hills with tree lined properties. We were pelted with small bits of hail, wind and rain when we got to the Cemetery. It was like 34 degrees so we started our tour inside in a montumn build on the grounds. While inside we watched a few short films about D-Day and the men involved. It showed a lot of personal stories with clips from family members of the deceased. That was really sad to see what person had sacrificed and put a face to this tragic event. Weebly is killing me tonight I have a lot more photos to post so I will have to update it tomorrow when it is loading faster. Today we got to leave Paris and go to Rouen and Bayeux. It was about a 2 hour drive to get to the Rouen Cathedral in the town of Rouen. It is one of the first examples of gothic architecture. It was a blizzard on the way there so we couldn't really see the countryside. We learned from our tour guide about how this cathedral is backwards on the outside. Normal old testament people were on the left and new testament on the right but this one is backwards by accident. This is also famous because Claude Monet did 28 paintings of the Cathedral in different lights. We learned about how the statues on the outside are no longer originals. The weather was destroying them so they made casts and theses are the originals that are now inside. They used to be black from pollution. Most of the glass got broken by WWII. They didn't take it all out like Saint Chapelle did so most of it is from the 1960's or wasn't replaced like here in this photo that just has regular glass. Its too bad that a lot was broken since some of it was from the 12th and 15th century. During the war 4 bombs were dropped right on the Cathedral and destroyed almost all the right side but two posts which somehow held all the weight of that side. So the right side is all rebuilt but you can't tell. Also it originally was all painted in bight colors but has faded over time and only in a few spots could you see that there was any colors left. The black is all dirt and pollution if I'm correct. Also in a lot of the exterior figures have no heads because during the holy war they had the heads broken off. It started to really snow after we got outside. It is so cold!! We are miserable outside. For a while it had the highest steeple but they made it out of medal rods so it caught on fire a lot. We then got back on the bus for 1 and half hours and when to Bayeux to see the tapestry. We weren't suppose to take photos of the tapestry to heres the only one I got. It was huge and made for the people since they couldn't read. We then just followed the professor to a random cathedral in Bayeux it was like completely empty. There was no works or other people. ![]() Here are the crypts under the cathedral in Bayeux. It was dark and said no flash so sorry. Pretty much everywhere says no flash. We then went to the hotel for tonight. |
